What’s the sign of a truly great SUV? Some might say it’s the rugged capability to go anywhere. Others might say it’s all about style and comfort. Luckily, the 2006 Hyundai Santa Fe has both, as well as the performance and safety ratings that earned it a “Best Bet” honor by Jack Gillis in The Car Book 2005. All that, plus America’s Best Warranty—a warranty that’s so impressive, it’s unsurpassed by any other car company. Now how can anyone pass that up?The Hyundai Santa Fe is a mid-size crossover SUV based on the Hyundai Sonata platform. It was introduced in 2001. Hyundai's success for releasing its first-ever SUV wanted to pursue the company to release the first economy mid-size crossover SUV in North America, and Toyota was in hot pursuit by releasing the Highlander, while GM released the Pontiac Aztek. It was a major milestone in the company's restructuring program of the late 1990s.
The Santa Fe, despite being criticized by journalists for its obscure looks, was a hit with the American buyers. Hyundai dealers were having a hard time keeping them in stock, let alone keeping up with demand. The Santa Fe quickly became Hyundai's best seller and was a major factor in keeping the company afloat in the United States.

[MSN]The all-new 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe debuted at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit and is the first production vehicle designed at Hyundai’s design center in Irvine, Calif. Built on an all-new platform, the boldly styled Santa Fe is designed to meet American consumers’ demand for safety, style, sophistication and performance, according to Hyundai.
Before designing the new Santa Fe, Hyundai engineers benchmarked other SUVs including the Lexus RX, Acura MDX and Volvo XC90. Hyundai describes the result as a more exciting, upscale Santa Fe that combines the best attributes of SUVs with the driving character of a midsize sedan.
The Korea-based company wants to provide SUV customers with segment-leading standard safety technologies and a high level of standard equipment at a very competitive price. Electronic Stability Control (ESC), anti-whiplash active head restraints and six airbags including side air curtains, which help protect occupants in all three rows during side impacts, are all standard equipment.
The 2007 Santa Fe shares an assertive front grille, confidently sculptured lines and finely detailed headlights with Hyundai’s HCD9 Talus concept, which was also introduced at the NAIAS 2006. A roof rack with integrated cross rails helps define its clean side profile, while adding functionality.
For 2007 the standard 2.7-liter V6 is upgraded to more than 180 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque (preliminary estimates), while the optional 3.3-liter V6 preliminary output estimates are more than 230 horsepower and 220 lb-ft of torque. Electronically controlled all-wheel drive is optional, and a new driver-selectable AWD lock provides a fixed 50/50 torque split between front and rear wheels.
The all-new Santa Fe is about seven inches longer than its predecessor, one inch wider and almost two inches taller with a 2.9-inch wider track.

[Edmunds]Introduced for the 2001 model year, the Hyundai Santa Fe cuts to the heart of what most American SUV buyers really want -- the ride and handling characteristics of a car melded with the styling and tall seating position of a truck. At the same time, it's big on value. While priced to match compact competitors like the Tribute and RAV4, the Santa Fe is based on Hyundai's previous-generation Sonata sedan platform, which means that it's technically a midsize SUV and accordingly offers more room for passengers and cargo.
Like other Hyundai vehicles, this one is packed with desirable standard features and comes with a strong standard warranty. And the Santa Fe's crash test scores have generally been very good. The Sante Fe is now in the sixth year of its model cycle, but Hyundai has made continual improvements over the years to keep it competitive among budget SUVs. Most significant among these was the arrival of a 3.5-liter V6 and a five-speed automatic transmission, a combination that vastly improved its acceleration. When equipped with all-wheel drive, this Hyundai SUV can handle well-groomed dirt roads, but it's not a serious off-roader like the Xterra or Sorento. However, we would certainly recommend the 2006 Hyundai Santa Fe to the general consumer looking for a good deal on a family vehicle that doesn't have any serious faults.
2006 Hyundai Santa Fe Specifications
Body Styles, Trim Levels and Options:
The four-door Hyundai Santa Fe is sold in GLS and Limited trims. Standard equipment on the GLS includes side airbags; air conditioning; power windows, mirrors and locks; a CD player; 16-inch alloy wheels; a full-size spare tire; an auto-dimming rearview mirror; and foglights. Options on the GLS include a power sunroof and a Monsoon sound system with an in-dash CD changer. The Monsoon stereo comes standard on the high-line Limited, along with automatic climate control, a power driver seat, leather upholstery, heated seats and a trip computer.
Powertrains and Performance:
The GLS model comes standard with a 2.7-liter V6 rated at 170 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque; it's paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. Optional on the GLS and standard on the Limited is a 3.5-liter V6 good for 200 hp and 219 lb-ft of torque. This engine comes with a five-speed automatic. Both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive models are available on this Hyundai SUV. Although the smaller V6 is rated for up to 26 mpg on the highway, the 3.5-liter turns in poor fuel numbers for a small SUV application -- just 16-17 mpg in the city and 21-22 on the highway.
Safety:
Four-wheel antilock disc brakes, traction control and side airbags (for front occupants) are standard on all models. In government crash tests, the Hyundai Santa Fe received four out of five stars for driver protection in frontal impacts and five stars for the front passenger. Side-impact testing resulted in a five-star rating for front- and rear-passenger protection. In frontal-offset crash testing conducted by the IIHS, the Santa Fe received a "Good" rating (the highest possible); in IIHS side-impact testing, it earned an "Acceptable" rating (the second highest).
Interior Design and Special Features:
Inside, the Hyundai Santa Fe offers reasonable accommodations for five and a 29.4-cubic-foot cargo bay; fold down the 60/40-split rear seats, and you get a generous 78 cubes. The cabin boasts a sharp two-tone color scheme and feels high in quality, as Hyundai has fitted it with low-gloss plastics and solid switchgear. The seats are comfortable, but legroom can be a bit tight for adults in back, and unlike the Equinox and CR-V, the Santa Fe doesn't offer fore/aft adjustment for its rear bench.
Driving Impressions:
The 2006 Hyundai Santa Fe has just what most family-oriented buyers want: adequate power and a smooth, quiet ride. Its handling capabilities provoke little excitement but unless you're a driving enthusiast, you probably won't mind the soft setup. If you opt for an AWD Sante Fe, you'll have a bargain-priced, all-weather family vehicle.
Automatic Transmission
The 3.5-liter V6 engine is matched with an electronically controlled, 5-speed automatic transmission with SHIFTRONIC®, so you can enjoy smooth, clutchless manual sport-shifting through the gear range.
3.5-Liter V6 Engine
More power to you. This brawny 3.5-liter, 24-valve, double overhead cam V6 engine pumps out 200 horsepower and 219 pound-feet of torque on both the GLS 3.5L and the new Santa Fe Limited model.

Driver’s License (Class D)
If you have a valid license to drive from any state in the U.S. or province of Canada, you are not required to take a written test or driving test to obtain a Massachusetts license. You are, however, required to take a written examination if the out-of-state license has been expired for more than 1 year. At a branch office of the Registry of Motor Vehicles, you may fill out an application form and make an appointment to take the written exam. If you pass the exam and an eye test, a photo license will be issued. The total cost is $75 (regardless of whether any exam is required) and it is valid for five years.
Registration
Massachusetts residents are required to register their cars and motorcycles. You may do so at any branch office of the Registry of Motor Vehicles. Proof of ownership must be presented, in the form of the title to your car. If you come from a state that does not require titles, a bill of sale or a past registration will be accepted. Prior to registering your car or motorcycle, you will also need insurance certification issued by a licensed Massachusetts insurance company, indicating that your car is insured in accordance with Massachusetts laws. Registration costs $36 for two years. Note: Application for a Massachusetts title must be made at this time. The cost is $50.
Inspection
Within seven days after registering your car in Massachusetts, you must
have it inspected at any gas station or automobile repair shop that has
been certified by the Registry of Motor Vehicles as an official inspection
station.
An inspection maintenance program requires both a yearly safety and emissions level inspection of motor vehicles. Motor vehicles that are more than 15 years old, that have a maximum speed of 25 m.p.h. or less, that have a diesel engine, that have a registered weight of 8,500 pounds or more, are motorcycles, or are new vehicles being registered for the first time are exempt from the emissions part of the inspection.
The fee for a combined safety and emissions inspection or a safety only
inspection is $29.
